The age-old question that has plagued adolescents and adults a like for generations.
There are times when we reflect on where we are in life and where we are going. Sometimes the life we see for ourselves isn’t a clear picture. This anxiety for the future can cause an unnecessary amount of excess stress and have a negative impact on your mental, spiritual and physical health.
Today I am going to walk you through how to decide what to do with your life and leave you with a clearer picture, and better understanding for that life has in store for you.
“Do I do my life?” – The Origins
Tradition has long played a role in “helping” people decide what job or career they would do, and to a degree it still does today. Being born into a family business or trade can be extremely advantageous. Typically, you begin learning valuable skills at an earlier age than your peers and enter the workforce a step ahead.
If you are in a position to be a part of your family’s business or trade I highly recommend taking advantage of your situation. Even if you have other dreams and aspirations, having a foundational skill set you can fall back on will be extremely useful throughout your life. That skill set could also be leveraged to build financial capital to finance your dreams/goals.
Our modern world however allows us to engage in and learn new skills at a high level with relative ease. This has made it remarkably easy to change our career path at virtually any time in our lives. This also allows those of us without family ties to gain a leg up over our peers in the workforce.
Make a Decision
Choice paralysis is likely the most common source of anxiety when trying to decide what to do with your life. This is where having a family business or trade can be the path of least resistance. But if you have been struggling to decide between a couple options, go with your intuition and pick the one that feels most right. Trust yourself and sick to it!
Perhaps you don’t have a single clue what you could possibly do with yourself. Use an interest you have or character quality you want to embody as a guide. For example, if you like cycling learn how to be a bike mechanic. If you want to embody courage, train to be a firefighter. There is limitless potential here, but don’t let that become overwhelming! Allow it to empower and embolden you.
The most important part of decision-making is following through with it. It is of the utmost importance that once you decide to do something, you do it. Anything less is a failure will result in feelings of low self-worth. We must hold ourselves accountable, as no one else will do it for us.
Align Your Actions
Once you have made a decision you need to be able to see it in your minds eye. Visualize the finish line of your path. See in your minds eye where you are, who and what surrounds you, and the type person you have become. Think about the daily tasks and routines this future version of you took in order to have accomplished that vision. Now you must work backwards from that vision and begin to implement those daily steps it takes to get there.
This routine will become repetitive and monotonous and a struggle in and of itself. You must persevere. It is important for me to reiterate the follow through aspect of the choice you make. If you fail you see your first goal to the finish line, you are less likely to see the next goal you set for yourself to its final conclusion.
On your journey, as you walk down your path, you will with certainty experience adversity. It can come in many forms, whether it be financial, physical, social, spiritual, emotional or mental. We must keep in mind that it is through struggle and struggle alone that we can foster growth.
The obstacle is the way! Knowing that struggle is growth and growth is the goal, we must tackle our struggles head on. Avoidance of hardship will only breed regression. So get out there and embrace the adversity in your life. Allow it to provide strength and confidence on your journey.
Enjoy the Ride
While it may seem like this choice will have a devastating and lasting effect the outcome of the rest of your entire life, the truth is that life is a mystery! The purpose of said mystery is not to be solved, but to remain mysterious. Although you can do your best to make plans, life will inevitably throw a wrench in those plans and all we can do is the best we can.
Sometimes a life altering event and leave you in a position where you are unable to continue down the path you had initially set yourself, and that’s okay! As I mentioned earlier, there is an abundance of learning material at your disposal and if you apply yourself you can learn an entirely new skill set and create a new vision for your life.
As life can change around us by no fault of our own, stick to your daily process through these times and it will pay dividends in the future. Remember, consistent imperfect action over time = success. I wish you the best of luck on your adventure.
